How to wire non-OEM Heated Seats I searched a lot of different threads and could not find out how to wire non-OEM heated seat pads to the existing BMW E46 wiring so that the seats will shut off automatically when the keys are removed/turned off in the ignition. I installed Dorman 628-040 Universal Seat Heater Kit ($60 on Amazon).

The heating elements (one for the seat and the other for the back) need to be inserted under the leather. Not easy to do and not cheap either.
BMW seats with the adjuster buttons on the side have the controls built in the seat themselves so they only need a VE+ and VE- to work. Heated seats and things like massage will be controlled via a center console mounted switch, so those things do require a seperate wire to the seats to operate the function.
Thought Iâd share the plan for the e91 m3 build. Havenât decided on diffuser or skirts yet but otherwise this should be pretty close. 153. 50. r/E90. Join. âą 14 days ago. E91 M3 conversion under way! Will be documenting absolutely every part of the build.

The heated seats are not the best. I had a Insignia Eco 2010 model from work. The heat on those seats were far greater than the BMW. Maybe BMW took it consideration that too much heat on the seats would make the driver lazy, thus reducing the awareness of the drivers. Last edited by immy786r123; 09-20-2016 at 04:43 AM..
Hey there - just replaced my number 32 fuse due to the heated seats failing like yours. I turned the car off and left the key in ignition. After replacing the fuse, the seats worked fine but the car would not start. Engine would turn but then die and drained the battery.
The difference with the X3 apparently is that the heating elements are bonded to the seat fabric/leather to some extent. Since the entire leather assembly must be replaced, this is what becomes costly. The heating elements independently are not a big deal, but the leather components are. I think it's $1600 US per seat in the front, not
